When technological innovation also affects the design of a chair

Those who work in the seating sector know well how fundamental the design of the product is; the chair, as indeed other furnishing objects, must not only respond to functional needs (comfort, strength, solidity) but also have shapes that are pleasing from the point of view of aesthetics.

The study of chair design is certainly not a novelty: we think of the masters of architecture and design that within the school of the Bauhaus have given birth to some of the most iconic models of chairs ever and that are still produced today.  Even within the famous school, product design was the subject of in-depth study with the aim of providing students with specific skills on these aspects.

And how much does the design of the seat count on the final product today?

Today the situation has not changed and those who produce seats know how the market is increasingly demanding even on aesthetics.

Unlike in the past, the technological innovation of materials and processing techniques offers new opportunities in terms of design.

It is, in fact, thanks to the use of certain materials, more performing than others, that it is possible to obtain thinner and sinuous shapes with an aesthetically pleasing final effect.

One of these is the moulded polyurethane that completely revolutionizes the way of building the seat; in fact, unlike the traditional wooden system or the metal frame, this material offers the opportunity to create seats with more complex shapes.

And if you want to go even further and build a seat with a less linear and square design and no limits of thickness of the various parts, you can do this by combining the rigid polyurethane structure of the parts made of flexible polyurethane.

And this is how it becomes much easier to produce pieces with a more extreme design that, however, don’t lose solidity, flexibility and comfort.

The combination of the two polyurethanes (rigid and flexible) allows maximum freedom in terms of shapes and thicknesses, as well as comfort, unlike what happens with polyurethane combined with metal elements that guarantees yes shapes from modern lines but the thickness remains high, and the foam can’t reach levels of softness as in the first case.

The production process of Sititaly involves the use of rigid structural polyurethane instead of the classic metal frame, using special bonding systems that make the flexible and rigid parts easily separable during disposal or disposed of as a single material. This is why Sititaly polyurethane seats have a reduced environmental impact and are designed with maximum respect for the environment.

In addition to the opportunities in terms of design and aesthetics of the seat, this particular construction system also guarantees many other advantages:

–  the shapes more accurately reproduce the drawing of the seat;

–  the construction is simplified and there are fewer pieces to be disposed of (just think that there are no wooden strips for the tissue dotting);

–  the targeted discharges on the flexible foam provide greater comfort;

– improved edge tightness and no shrinkage in curved areas;

–  no dent problem in the packaging.

Davide Rossetto

I have been working in the furniture sector for over thirty years. In particular, I specialized in the use of polyurethanes for the production of seats.
I believe that new paths can still be explored today with the aim of developing increasingly sustainable furniture, without however renouncing the aesthetic, technical, ergonomic and functional qualities of the product.
Creativity, intuition and innovation are the aspects that have always accompanied me in my career path.
